Fitness on a tropical island in Cambodia

What’s more to love than having a work out on one of the most beautiful islands on the world. Can you imagine doing bicep curls with concrete dumbells between the forests with an outlook on the sea, while hearing and feeling a sea breeze? It’s all possible on Koh Rong Samloem. One of the highlights of my trip.

Koh Rong Samloem is reachable by boat from the city of Sihanoukville in Cambodia. It’s the little, peaceful brother isle of the more well known party island Koh Rong. Koh Rong Samloem is known for its beautiful beaches and nature. There is a big chance you will see wild monkeys while trekking through the forests. The special thing about this island is that they have beaches that are very different. My favourite beach is the white beach, which has sand as white as milk. But others love to visit the golden beach, a serene beach with sand made of “gold”.

What I especially loved about this Island, besides the fantastic beaches, is that there is no mobile connection on this island. Which gives you the possibility to really connect with the people around you, instead of checking Facebook for the zillionsth time. Living here for a week I felt how it must be to be a backpacker back in the days, a unforgettable experience.

But you are a fitnessbackpacker and not interested in this hippy stuff. Who cares about connection when you can make gains, right? I found two “fitness” facilities on this island. The first one belongs to the Mad Monkey hostel. You’re working out here with wooden sticks with concrete on both sides and thinks alike. Don’t expect too much (an understatement). However it’s enough to get a pump and impress some folks with your inflated pectoralis major for 20 minutes, untill the pump fades away and you’re back to reality again. The second gym facility is even more modest and belongs to another resort. The view from this gym is breathtaking. Rest periods were never so much fun and will turn in longtime gazes at the beach.
