While travelling through Indonesia I had some good workouts at the following gyms. If you are a backpacker that wants to maintain a strong physique, these following two gyms can help you attain your goals. Eat, Train, Sleep, Fancy some parties and cultural stuff and Repeat! I visited two gyms. The first gym I visited was a gym on Bali. The second gym I visited was on a small island nearby Bali, called Gili Trawangan.
When you are in Bali and searching for a good workout, Hammerhead Fitness is your place. The gym is not very big, but they have excellent machines and dumbells up to 50 kg. Furthermore it is an excellent choice when you want to meet up with other fitness backpackers. I went there on Sunday and immediately made two friends, and had a great night with them the same night. Because you will find likeminded people at Hammerhead Bali, it is ideal for the solo fitness backpacker. In addition, I saw a lot of fantastic strongmen and bodybuilders who are really inspiring you to have a good workout. You pay 80.000 IDR (€5,50) for one workout, which is not cheap, but if you love to workout it is doable.
GiliFit is located on the tropical island of Gili Trawangan and it is the only gym on this island. It is smaller than Hammerhead fitness and a bit more old school without proper machines. But who am I to argue about, I was happy enough to train. It is still possible to have a more than decent workout here. Maybe you won’t find the dumbbells you want, but there is a bench and squat rack. What more do you need? You pay 50.000 IDR for one workout, but it is also possible to sleep at GiliFit. In this case you have free gym access. I can advice a stay at GiliFit for the fitness-backpackers among us.
